Tamar Jackson Nelson, Ph.D., CI & CT, NIC Master, recently graduated from Gallaudet University’s Ph.D. in Interpretation program (pedagogy/research). Her research focused on the impact of preparation on interpretations. Tamar is proud to have been an adjunct professor for Gallaudet’s Department of Interpretation, Saint Paul College, in their Sign Language Interpreter/Transliterator program, and Troy University in their B.S. in interpreting program. Tamar brings an enthusiasm to teaching and learning about interpreting with the goal of promoting the growth, development, and respect of the interpreting profession. Workshop topics she has presented on include omissions, processing time, medical interpreting, LGBTQI consumers, and others. She has presented these workshops at state, regional, and national level conferences of the RID as well as the NAD. Tamar continues to work as a certified community interpreter, mentor, ER on-call interpreter, VRI, and VRS interpreter.

Alex Jackson Nelson, MSW, LGSW, NIC identifies as Transgender and has over fifteen years of experience working in and for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, and Intersex (LGBTQI) community. He earned is Master of Social Work degree from Gallaudet University and was the primary investigator for research with the D/HH/DB LGBTQI community in Washington, DC. He has served as the Executive Director of a non-profit LGBT youth center, has co-founded organizations focused on providing services to transgender and gender-nonconforming youth, worked as a Senior Policy Advocate and has provided consulting and training to thousands of service providers and ASL interpreters around the country. Alex has been a certified interpreter for ten years, most recently he has worked for the Metro Deaf School in St. Paul and as the Director of Training and Senior Therapist at RECLAIM!, a non-profit agency that provides mental health services to queer and trans youth in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Alex currently works for the Minnesota Department of Human Services training child welfare workers.

Alex presents and facilitates trainings at various businesses, non-profits, regional, state and national conferences.
